Onboard GPS Signal Augmentation for Spacecraft Formation Flying
نویسنده
چکیده
Formation ying of multiple vehicles requires accurate information on the relative position and attitude between the vehicles. Carrier Phase Di erential GPS (CDGPS) can provide the necessary accuracy in position and attitude sensing to successfully carry out such missions. In missions with little to no visibility to the NAVSTAR constellation, CDGPS can still be used by augmenting the available signals with onboard transmitters broadcasting the L1 carrier signal modulated by a unique C/A code. The feasibility of this augmented GPS system is demonstrated with a two-vehicle formation in an indoor environment.

For the improvement of accuracy and better faulttolerant performance, a global position system (GPS)/vision navigation (VISNAV) integrated relative navigation and attitude determination approach is presented for ultra-close spacecraft formation flying. Onboard GPS and VISNAV system are adopted and a federal Kalman filter architecture is used for the total navigation system design. Simulation re...
متن کاملFirst Results from a Hardware-in-the-Loop Demonstration of Closed-Loop Autonomous Formation Flying
A closed-loop system for the demonstration of autonomous satellite formation flying technologies using hardware-in-the-loop has been developed. Making use of a GPS signal simulator with a dual radio frequency outlet, the system includes two GPS space receivers as well as a powerful onboard navigation processor dedicated to the GPS-based guidance, navigation, and control of a satellite formation...
متن کاملOnboard Pseudolite Augmentation System for Relative Navigation
GPS carrier phase positioning can provide accurate measurements of relative position and attitude between multiple vehicles. In environments without adequate signal coverage from the NAVSTAR GPS satellites, the available signals can be augmented with pseudolites onboard the vehicles in the formation. This paper experimentally demonstrates the feasibility of such a system, with a formation of th...
متن کاملNavigation Performance Predictions for the Orion Formation Flying Mission
This paper presents hardware-in-the-loop results that experimentally demonstrate precise relative navigation for true formation flying spacecraft applications. The approach is based on carrier-phase differential GPS, which is an ideal navigation sensor for these missions because it provides a direct measure of the relative positions and velocities of the vehicles in the fleet. In preparation fo...

Formation flying is a key technology for deep space and orbital applications that involve multiple spacecraft operations. Imaging and remote sensing systems based on radio interferometry and SAR require very precise (subwavelength) aperture knowledge and control for accurate relative data collection and processing. Closely tied with the Orion and TechSat21 projects, this work describes the ongo...
